Omoplata Series by Clark Gracie

Clark likes to teach foundational guard control concepts to beginners of jiu jitsu and usually begins by demonstrating how jiu jitsu can allow you to defend yourself even when you're on your back. We begin the seminar with basic open guard control concepts using both our legs and arms to make collar grips and leg hooks that hinder the mobility of our opponent.

Clark has been using the spider guard lasso control since he was a blue belt. In this lesson, he demonstrates how he uses the lasso control to manipulate his opponent and sweep them with the "spider guard classic sweep with lasso control" or simply "lasso control classic sweep". This sweep is very similar to, and a variation of, the "Classic Spider Guard Sweep" or " JJU 19-03 Sweep Off a Pass" as seen in the JJU book.

In this lesson, we learn the spinning inverted omoplata or spinning inverted triangle from the spider guard lasso control. After securing the lasso control on your opponent, be sure to get the correct cross-sleeve grips before going inverted to control your opponent and increase your chances of a successful submission.

Clark re-tells his story behind the "photogenic jiu jitsu guy" meme. He gives us a breakdown of how he was able to maintain the omoplata completely airborn for over a minute and finish the fight even though his opponent had stood up to escape the submission.

Clark teaches another one of his favorite submissions, the cross collar palm up palm down choke from inverted guard. Clark explains that he sometimes goes to inverted guard to defend against a guard pass and can often catch his opponent by surprise with this submission.

Clark shows a tricky submission that can catch your opponent off guard when they have you tied up in the de la riva guard. He entangles his opponent's de la riva hook leg as he rolls to attack it with a rolling calf slicer. The calf slicer is often illegal in competitions at lower levels so be sure to check if it is before busting it out during competition.

Clark shows an acrobatic submission, the flying triangle and flying armbar when your opponent has you in their butterfly guard with a cross collar grip. With good timing and practice, you can catch your opponent off guard by jumping past through their butterfly guard straight into the submission.

Clark teaches the wheel pass, a quick open guard pass that can be initiated from the knees or standing against the butterfly or open guard.

Clark shows a brabo choke variation that uses your own lapel to choke your opponent from side control. Being choked with your opponent's lapel is rare and you may be able to catch them off guard with this sneaky submission!
