I was lucky enough to be in Brazil when Dean Lister won the 2003 Abu Dhabi World submission Championships, and let me tell you - this guy is a submission freak. It was with great anticipation that I plugged the DVD into the player.

I can sum up my review of Dean Lister’s Real World Submission in two words, IT ROCKS!.

The DVD is broken into 3 parts. Movie, Techniques and Bonus section.

The movie section is pretty cool, it’s more of a Biography/Documentary. It starts with Dean talking about the background of MMA and Submissions and then he continues on to give his accomplishments. (very impressive!) Next, we get to watch Dean do some pad work with a trainer in Holland. It's fun to watch Dean's trainer pop him in the head when his hands are down! Next, he teaches a great seminar in Sweden with some drills I'm going to steal and then he talks about travel and successfully competes at a submission event in Germany. The Movie section is fun and a nice variant from all the standard 'How-to' instructionals that are on the market.

In the techniques section, Dean covers the Triangle, Long Range Kimura, "DLR" Guard, a Cool Knee bar and the Foot lock.

Dean's style of teaching is great, I felt like I was in a one on one lesson with Dean. He talks about concepts as well as the technique, which really lets you understand his game. In each technique I picked up something new to try and I can't wait to experiment with them in the gym.

The Bonus section has Dean discussing the Gi/No Gi controversy and footage of an interview he did in Germany. The bonus section finishes off with a discussion on what it takes to be a world champion.
